Client only key encryption storage service

Redirected from Client only key encryption

A service that encrypts data on your computer (or computers) so that it cannot be read either in transit OR when it reaches it destination. This is more secure than services like Dropbox which either don't encrypt your data at all, or only encrypt at the destination.

Common risks this prevents against

  • Subpoena
  • Employee snooping
  • Data loss due to servers being hacked.
  • Arbitrary deletion of data found to infringe copyright by automated systems.

Potential problems

  • If your key/password used to encrypt the data is lost, your service provider will not be able to help you retrieve your data.
  • While theoretically far more secure, in closed sourced systems with client only encryption it is harder to rule out the existence of back doors.
